DELICIOUS NOSH AT CAFÉ NUSH

Cafe Nush

I love breakfast.  The rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingled in with the smell of other breakfast delights gives a strong sense of purpose to the start of the day.  Indulgence at breakfast is at once seemingly decadent, but also essential.  After all, we have gone without food over night, and we do need to ‘break that fast’ before we commit to the rigors of a strenuous day ahead.  It may well be argued that Sunday is not a ‘strenuous’ day, but it is usually the one day available to the whole family to have a leisurely breakfast together.  Armed with this persuasive rhetoric, we set forth on the Breakfast Run, taking a short cut to our closest restaurant, Café Nush, situated at Avondale Shopping Centre, in the newly established Vera Mall.

The robust aroma of coffee drew us into the restaurant, and before we even looked at the menu, we ordered our first Cappuccino of the day.  Café Nush has hit on a good plan with their coffee.  You can choose between a regular Cappuccino and a strong Cappuccino, something which I really appreciate, given that many coffee shops and restaurants tend to serve ‘nurserychinos’ – frothy, milky excuses for a Cappuccino.  As we sipped our ‘adultchinos’, we scanned the menu.  Apart from a wide and interesting selection of coffees, Café Nush’s menu is both varied and interesting.  The selection of dishes for breakfast ranges from a full-house breakfast with all the trimmings, to Omlettes, Flapjacks, Croissants and Muesli, with fruit juices on offer as well.  In fact, the menu for lunches and dinners looked great as well, with a selection of Indian dishes complimenting the more traditional meals.

Rupert, being a man renowned for his healthy breakfast appetite, had only one choice; the Full-House Breakfast.  He was not disappointed when his meal arrived.  Two fried eggs were cooked to his ‘medium’ request, surrounded by mushrooms, beef sausages, baked beans, tomato, onions and toast.  A meal fit for a king.  Bacon is not served at Café Nush, but the smoked beef alternative was very tasty.  Our son, blessed with an equally healthy appetite, chose a Mushroom and Smoked Beef Omlette, with chips and fried tomato on the side.  I know that he enjoyed his breakfast because he didn’t say a word until he had finished his meal.  Other omlette fillings are Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese, Spinach and Cheddar.
My daughter liked the sound of the Flapjack Stack with Caramelised Pecan Nuts and Bananas.  They were delicious, with the nuts and banana incorporated into the Flapjacks and maple syrup cascading down the generous serving.  Other Flapjack options included Strawberries and Cream and Flavoured Fruit Butter.   I tried the Croissant with Smoked Salmon, Avocado and Cream Cheese - a delicately balanced taste sensation.  This meal was served with chips, which, personally, I could have done without, as the Croissant was meal enough in itself.  There are also other fillings available for the croissants.

Replete and relaxed, we sat back to enjoy another cup of coffee, this time a Filter Coffee which was robust and smooth.  Café Nush is a popular meeting place, and the restaurant hummed with activity on Sunday morning, with many patrons coming in to choose pastries, muffins and other cakes from the selection at the main counter.  The Café has a Continental feel about it – a cosmopolitan clientele and modern décor and furnishings.  You can sit on the verandah, in the slightly raised ‘lounge’ area or at tables dotted inside.  I was intrigued by the chairs at the small but high coffee tables.  They had no back, only a small ridge to stop you falling off.  I tested one out, and they were remarkably and unexpectedly comfortable.

We thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast and suggest a high four egg rating for
Café Nush.
