Healthy Heaven at Eve’s Garden

If breakfast at Tiffany’s was notable enough to inspire the film and many years later the song, then it’s an awful shame that I’m not a script writer or musician as breakfast at Eve’s Garden is definitely worth writing home about.

A power cut at home and a kitchen full of work men at my friend’s house left us with no choice but to venture out in search of hot beverages, sanity and sustenance.  Having dropped her kids off at a holiday club, my friend and I drove the short distance from my house to Hurworth Road to see what was on offer for breakfast at Eve’s Garden.

With a reputation for being one of the more “healthy haunts” in Harare, we were both a little worried that we’d leave with a dose of hay fever from an obscure herbal tea and if not pursued by squirrels, at least rattling noisily from an excess of nuts  and muesli.  We all like to pretend that we’re the poster girls for healthy living, but in reality, time constraints and laziness do a pretty good job of keeping us off the straight and narrow.  Imagine our surprise, when we were brought the menu and discovered that not only could we munch our way through bowls full of crunchy grains and fruit salad with lashings of natural yoghurt , but that we could enjoy the equivalent of a Full English Fry Up – without, yes, without , the pangs of guilt?  In fact, so good were the choices on the menu that it took us rather a long time to decide what to have.  In the spirit of The Breakfast Run, we both eventually decided on the Big Bake, which is a worthy and serious alternative to the traditional Full English Breakfast.  Baked sausages, bacon, tomato, baked beans, two poached eggs and toast, presented on pretty crockery, and completely delicious, was an awful lot more than we’d bargained for.  Poached egg on spinach and herby omelettes were tempting enough to have us agreeing on a return visit before Christmas, just to make sure that we’re not tempted into breaking any New Year’s resolutions too early in the New Year.

The beverage selection is one of the most extensive that I’ve come across (22 options all told), with everything from the enormously tempting Carrot and Apple Kick-Start (wish I’d tried it, but chose dreamy hot chocolate instead), to coffee and smoothies.  My friend enjoyed her cappuccino very much and we both considered, before we saw the enormous plate of food that made up the Big Bake, having fruit smoothies with our meal, discretion was definitely the better part of valour here as I’m sure that a smoothie would have been a meal in itself and more than we could have handled.

Eve’s Garden is located in the grounds of the Centre for Healthy Living and quite apart from the secure parking; the whole atmosphere is one of peace and tranquility.  The staff in the café are calm and serene, the lighting is soft, the gardens immaculate, everything is spotlessly clean and you will find yourself leaving, feeling somewhat reluctant to re-enter the fray, at least for the rest of the day.

Whilst waiting for our food to arrive, my friend and I studied the menu at length and were delighted by the number of dishes on offer and how delicious everything sounded.  We were not expecting the variety or imagination that has gone into the menu and my friend, who has grown up in a vegetarian household and knows a thing or two about the subject, was really impressed.  My carnivore of a husband would have been equally happy.  Interestingly, there is no mention on the menu of just how bad, or healthy you are actually being with any of your choices!

In terms of an overall breakfast experience, Eve’s Garden has wow factor in recycled bags full.  Prices are reasonable and most definitely value for money and I would hazard a guess that once you’ve eaten there, it’s the sort of place that you will keep going back to, because it’s hard to beat.  If I have to level any criticism, which I feel a little churlish doing…………………….we assumed that the toast was served dry for health reasons and were more than half way through our meal when the waitress remembered to bring over some butter, we also had to go looking for someone to tell them that we’d like the bill.  Neither of these things detracted from our enjoyment in any way and neither is significant enough to warrant a loss of points.  Very definitely, Eve’s Garden gets 5 eggs and I’ll add a slice of toast for good measure!
