Friends Meet at Miller’s Café

It was early morning, shortly after the busy Christmas period.  The previous few days had brought a stream of family and friends into our sparkling new kitchen for a seemingly endless series of meals.  This had provided me with quite sufficient opportunity to satisfy my urge for home-made designer cooking: I was now ready to go out and find someone else to cook breakfast for me.  Miller’s Café was the choice, and a good one it proved to be.

We set off, finding a nice shady parking near the venue, and as soon as we entered the Café’s terrace area, a very warm and friendly headwaiter smiled his welcome at us.  We were given the opportunity to look through the restaurants’ spacious and attractively functional inside dining room, the cosy covered verandah as well as the sunny outside eating area, before deciding on a verandah table.   Our assigned and highly efficient waiter produced a refreshing glass of cool fruit juice for us in no time at all, and left us with the extensive menu to study.  At Miller’s Café, the menu is really broad and delightfully varied, and besides offering a large selection of breakfast dishes, there is an attractive variation of Mediterranean-inspired lunch and dinner dishes too, ranging from pastas to pizzas, grilled steaks to fish dishes, while for those wanting lighter meals, there are hamburgers and toasted sandwiches, as well as many delicious starters and salads.

Back to breakfast, and I’m hungry!  There was a choice of croissants, omelettes (the one with smoked salmon held our attention for a while), various forms of traditional English breakfast, as well as lighter meals such as toast and mushrooms, and of course fruit, yoghurt, muesli and the like.  In the end my wife went for a Café Classic, consisting of a sesame roll topped with fried egg, bacon and a ‘secret’ sauce.  We easily got the serving on a sesame roll changed so that my companion could have her croissant and eat it.  I opted for the impressively described Gubu - not quite an omelette, nor a quiche, but something in between.  Prepared with three eggs, bacon, chorizo, green peppers, cheese and more, I decided it would suit my palate and appetite excellently.  The menu also said that the Gubu would be served in the skillet it was prepared in!  The prospect worried me slightly.
While waiting for our dishes, we were provided with complimentary toast, butter, jam and marmalade to keep us happily busy.  When the ordered dishes arrived, the Café Classic was a little cold, the egg a little overcooked,   and the secret sauce - somewhat puzzling - appeared to be a pink whisky sauce ideal for seafood.  However, a generous pile of crispy fried thin French fries were a very welcome additional surprise on the plate, a good portion of which I immediately laid claim to.  A closer scrutiny of the menu actually revealed that the chips came as an accompaniment to the Gubu.  But the chef had wisely decided that my Gubu (described as ‘can serve two’) would be quite enough for me – as indeed it proved to be – and that the chips ought to go on my better half’s plate – to be shared.  The Gubu itself arrived served on a proper large breakfast plate – what a relief not to have to deal with a hot and spitting skillet.  The plate itself was quite hot enough, and the food colourfully presented, topped with oodles of oozing melted cheese.

While enjoying our tasty food and observing the world go by, we spotted friends walking past: the Café’s location at the entrance of the shopping complex guarantees such happy encounters.  We hailed them in and they kindly joined us for a cup of coffee and a waffle with ice-cream and syrup.  Our ever accommodating waiter brought us each knives, forks and plates to enable us to share this, our sweet desert.  The accompanying coffees, cappuccinos and espressos, were well-made, hot and delicious.  We chatted, laughed and relaxed, basking in the professional yet unobtrusive care of the front-of-house staff at Miller’s Café.

Other friends passed by, waves and smiles were exchanged, but eventually we had to drag ourselves away.  The waiter brought us the bill promptly, and smoothly arranged payment and change.  As we strolled off, we contemplated what pleasure we had received from friends well-met, all the while enjoying the friendly service of Miller’s Café and their generous quality food.

Breakfast at Miller’s Café is a 4 egg experience, expect to pay about $12-$18 dollars per person for a sumptuous value-for-money breakfast.
