Nando’s, Mutare Review 2011
Efficient, friendly and cheerful are the words I would use to sum up our evening experience at the recently opened Nando’s, Mutare. The restaurant is a great way to spend a casual evening with friends and family. The first impression was a feeling of welcome; as my companion and I entered the building, we were greeted not only by the waiters but even the security guards gave us a warm smile and polite greeting. We wandered over to the counter to order and again received great customer care as we debated our order from the fairly limited menu which was displayed above the counter. After the cashier had taken our order we seated ourselves at our own table, without any hassle as the place was fairly empty. As we waited for our food we were able to appreciate the tasteful décor of the place, which was light, bright and cheerful, with well-chosen colourful pictures by local artists. Our order was delivered promptly, which is to be expected at a fast food restaurant. Our waiter was chatty and polite without being obtrusive; a key characteristic for a good waiter.
Since Nando’s is about fast food and convenience, there is probably not much scope for an aspiring, creative chef but the food served was pretty good. I had a chicken wrap which came with a portion of chips and soft-drink of my choice, and my companion had pita bread, also with chips, and we shared a large, somewhat rudimentary Portuguese salad. The pita bread was delicious and although the chicken wrap was tasty, the wrap itself was a little doughy. The chips however were cooked to crisp perfection. We lingered comfortably over our meal and other than a brief check by the waiter and later the manageress to see that all was well, we were left in peace.
We treated ourselves to a strawberry cheesecake and a hot chocolate pudding (definitely the wiser choice for a cold winter evening) After we had finished, we didn’t feel as though we were being rushed out, hence we lingered a little longer and soaked up the family atmosphere. After enjoying such a good meal we decided to get take-outs for those at home, so ordered and sat down on the waiting bench. After a slight confusion with our order, which was sorted out fairly smoothly and with very little fuss, we were on our way.
Not the best choice for a romantic occasion or a gourmet’s delight, Nando’s, Mutare provides a satisfying meal in comfortable, congenial surroundings and earns 3 stars.
