What the Plate Ratings mean
These indicate how well the restaurant scored when it was reviewed. The plate rating is based on the calculation of the percentage of total possible score available to the restautant, on those criteria which applied to it. Criteria which don't apply for any reason, are marked "Not Applicable" by the reviewer, and are discounted from this calculation:

5 Plates = 90% - 100%
4 Plates = 80% - 89%
3 Plates = 70% - 79%
2 Plates = 60% - 69%
1 Plate = 50% - 59%

DELUXE RESTAURANTS:
Restaurants aiming at the luxury market, and aspiring to be in the top echelon of eating establishments; accordingly aim for international standards appropriate for this high end market.

DELUXE FAMILY RESTAURANTS:
A relatively up-market, smart, generalist restaurant, which nevertheless does not fit into the Deluxe Restaurant category.

FAMILY RESTAURANTS:
A restaurant which does not aspire to be in the luxury market, and caters for a wide range of diners-out, with or without their children. Generally welcomes diners of all ages, serves broad-based cuisine and does not choose to enter the Speciality Category.

SPECIALITY RESTAURANTS:
Restaurants with a special focus, such as on food of a specific geographical origin, or on a particular type or genre of cuisine or dining experience, such as a steakhouse or vegetarian restaurant.

DELUXE COFFEE SHOPS:
A high end, up-market bistro, coffee shop or café, which serves full meals during at least two sittings, is open in total for hours closely comparable to those of a standard family restaurant, serves a good range of beverages which may or may not include alcohol, and also serves snacks and light meals.

COFFEE SHOPS:
A coffee shop or café which serves snacks, cakes, teas, coffees, light meals, and other non-alcoholic beverages.

Pub Restaurants:
A restaurant which is situated in, or adjacent to, and operates in association with, a bar or pub (public house), and which serves meals of any kind.
